La Cort di Asen

Chiavenna

La Cort di Asen is one of the most characteristic and photographed corners of Chiavenna’s historical center. The name comes from the fact that in ancient times the pack animals (horses, mules, donkeys) were parked here by those who came from outside the city and had business to attend to in the center. In the courtyard, before you climb the stairs, you can still see a row of rings on the left wall to which the animals were tethered.

The building in late medieval style with its wooden gallery supported by soapstone drum columns is possibly one of the few that survived the fire that destroyed Chiavenna in 1486.

The restoration work put the focus on the preservation of the original architectural style. Trying to reconcile the historical character of the buildings with modern construction techniques, EMMEZETA completely renovated two buildings that face the courtyard and Via Dolzino, paying particular attention to the restoration of the original frescoes on the façade and the wooden gallery.
